The lake, locally known as Pumlen pat is the second largest freshwater wetland situated at 93°50'E -94°0'E and 24°20'N -24°35'N, in Thoubal District, a distance of 40km from Imphal city towards the southern lowlands of the valley.

The associated lakes are Khoidum pat, Lamjao pat and Kakyaipat. The total area of 18.81 sq km.  of the lake is covered by a large heterogeneous floating soil vegetation mat, the phumdis.
