The lake,
locally known as Pumlen pat is the second largest freshwater wetland situated at
93°50'E -94°0'E and 24°20'N -24°35'N, in Thoubal District, a distance of 40km
from Imphal city towards the southern lowlands of the valley.
The associated lakes are Khoidum pat, Lamjao pat and Kakyaipat. The
main sources of water are from the precipitation, surface runoff from its
south-eastern denuded hills, the northern agricultural fields, and indirectly
from the Sekmai river through Khoidum pat on the northern side as well as from
the impounded Manipur river. The total area of 18.81 sq km. of the lake is
covered by a large heterogeneous floating soil vegetation mat, the phumdis.
