‘International Day of Action for River 2019’ observations held

An ‘International Day of action for River 2019’ programme was observed at Churachandpur today, organised by Rural Women Upliftment Society (RWUS) and ADCC.

The programme which witnessed the attendance of chairman of ADCC, T. Paukhanlian and officials form Border Security forces (BSF) as special guests commenced with a key note address by chief functionary of RWSU, Mary Bath Savage.

It was followed by speeches from the special guests who applauded the work of RWSU in the field. They stated that people need to stop spoiling Nature while pointing out that Churachandpur has been declared Open Defecation Free. “But, the residents near the river beds had manipulated the rivers and stream and it is a concern that needs to be stopped,” they said adding that there are provisions under law to persecute the offenders while asking the public to dispose garbage with all the sanitary means available instead of dumping them at the river and stream that creates a lot of pollution hazards.

While lauding the RWSU for their effort in the field, they further said, “We need to work collectively to transform the district including the fight against the drug menace and others social evils in the district.”

The programme held today was organised into two sessions with the first session being led by two resource persons, president of the Hmar Inpui –general headquarters, Roseph R Human and assistant professor, IGNTU, Dr. Immanuel Zarzosang Varte who spoke on the topics of “Background of international Day of River water and life” and “The role of civil society in protecting natural resources (special reference to rivers) for development and peace” respectively. In the second session action and cleaning up of Chienkon Lui (stream) was undertaken with initiative from the organisers of the event.
